May 6:  The first full day on Kauai.  I'm lying on a couch reading "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed -  the story of  26 yo woman who walked over 1000 miles on the Pacific Coast Trail starting in the Mohave Desert.  It's a lazy day here.  Looking out on the palm trees and the blue sky and the ocean in the distance, and feeling the peace of this place -- the phrase "Alternate Reality" came to mind.  This is Peace -- however transitory -- but for the moment -- far from the madding crowded life (as I know it, as I have created it) in the Purple Valley.  What is real? This place, or the other?
